SHY-150D Live Leaf Area Meter
Instruction Manual
Precautions:
This instrument is not suitable for measuring highly transparent sheet-like objects, and direct sunlight should be avoided from shining on the measurement window during use.
I. Uses
The SHY-150D leaf area meter is primarily used in agriculture, forestry, and other sectors to measure the live leaf area of plants. It can also be used to measure the area of harvested plant leaves or other flat, sheet-like objects, making it particularly well suited for measuring narrow, elongated leaves.
II. Functions
2.1 It can measure the area, length, width, and perimeter of both in vivo and excised leaves.
2.2. Measurement data can be saved individually, and the data is non-volatile.
2.3 Data that has been saved can be viewed and deleted on the instrument.
2.4 Data that has been saved can be transferred to a computer via the USB interface.
2.5 The instrument is powered by a high-capacity rechargeable lithium battery, providing long operating time.
2.6. The instrument can be charged via the USB interface, with a charging indicator and battery level display.
2.7 The instrument features a portable design, simple operation, and rapid measurement.

V. Instructions for Use
5.1、Measurement of Live Plant Leaf Area
Turn on the instrument’s power switch, hold the instrument in your hand, and press the thumb-operated clamping lever to open the pressure plates, thereby widening the probe’s front opening. Place the plant leaf inside the probe, beneath the leaf-pressing rotor (Figure a), positioning it close to the leaf base. Release the clamping lever, use one hand to hold the pull cord and the leaf base, and with the other hand press the zero-reset button (Figure b). The instrument will then display the “Measurement Preparation” screen. Next, slowly and uniformly pull the instrument out along the leaf’s growth direction at a speed of less than 160 mm/s, ensuring that the pull cord remains as perpendicular as possible to the measurement window throughout the process (Figure c). You will see the instrument enter the “Measuring” state. Once the leaf has been fully pulled out, the screen will display four measurement values: area, length, width, and perimeter.
5.2 Other Types of Area Measurement
Any sheet-like physical object with low transparency, a thickness not exceeding 6 mm, and a width not exceeding 150 mm can be measured. Prior to measurement, a transparent lead-in tape must be attached to the test specimen to ensure measurement accuracy.

Note: When measuring uneven surfaces or leaves that tend to curl, it is recommended to choose a plastic with high transparency.
Fold the thin film into a specimen holder and gently press the plant leaf flat inside.
5.3 Data Storage
When a data measurement is complete, press the “Confirm” button to save the current measurement data.
5.4 Data Viewing and Deletion
To operate the instrument, enter the “View” menu and use the “Up” or “Down” keys to browse all saved data; select the “Delete” menu to erase all data. (Individual item deletion is not supported.)
5.5 Data Upload
Connect the instrument to the computer using a USB cable, launch the accompanying software on the computer, and then navigate the instrument’s interface to the “View” and “Upload” menus. Press the “Confirm” button to transfer the data to the software on the computer.
5.6 After use, the instrument must be powered off. When the battery is low, it can be charged via the USB port; to ensure charging efficiency, charging should be performed with the instrument turned off.
VI. Troubleshooting
Fault phenomenon |
original Because |
Troubleshooting methods |
| Do not start data measurement | Strong light is shining on the measurement window. | Select an appropriate location to avoid direct exposure of the measurement window to strong light. |
| Poor repeatability during measurement. | 1. Foreign matter on the glass slide within the measurement window 2. The pull rope and the measurement window are not perpendicular during the measurement process. |
1. Clean thoroughly with a wiping cloth. 2. As far as possible, ensure that the pull rope remains perpendicular to the measurement window during the measurement process. |
| Large measurement error | 1. Insufficient power 2. Foreign matter on the glass slide within the measurement window 3. The pull rope is being pulled too quickly. |
1. Please charge. 2. Clean thoroughly with a wiping cloth. 3. Reduce the pull rope speed |
VII. Maintenance
7.1. The instrument shall be stored in a cool, dry place.
7.2 During instrument operation, ensure that the glass window within the measurement aperture is clean.
7.3. If the instrument is not used for an extended period, it should be charged and discharged at least once every three months.
