Instruction Manual for the CGQ-1 Altimeter
Release Date:
2021-06-22
I. Overview
This instrument is a field-measuring device used to determine the elevation of various targets; it can also measure elevation differences, cumulative elevations, and the slope angles of terrain features and man-made objects. Its main advantages are that it provides direct readings of measured elevation values, eliminating the need for conversion or lookup in tables. Additional benefits include its compact size, light weight, portability, simple operation, speed and convenience, and high measurement accuracy. When only height-related data are required, there is no need to set up large, complex instruments such as theodolites.
This instrument has a wide range of applications and can meet measurement requirements in various settings. It is extensively used in surveying and construction for projects in forestry, geology and mineral resources, power, telecommunications, road and bridge engineering, construction, water conservancy, and installation, among others.
- Principle and Structure
The sighting hole in the telescope and the front sight form an optical line of sight. When measuring the elevation of a point, this line of sight makes an elevation angle with the horizontal; given the horizontal distance, the elevation can be calculated using the tangent function.
This instrument consists of three parts: ( 1 ) Observation system (observation tube, observation hole, front sight); ( 2 ) Pointer control system (trigger, buttons, springs, etc.); ( 3 ) Numerical display system (height dial, pointer, needle shaft holder, etc.).
The four numerals circled on the left side of the first four rows at the top of the instrument each represent a different preset distance; during measurement, one of these distances is selected based on the specific situation, with the unit being meters. The scale values on each row indicate altitude, while the last row shows the elevation or depression angle in degrees.

- How to use
(1) Measuring Height
1 , Use a tape measure or measuring rope to determine the horizontal distance from the object being measured to the instrument (e.g., 15m, 20m, 30m, 40m) and take this line as the baseline.
2 Hold the instrument in your right hand and press the button to release the pointer.
3 , Bring the right eye close to and align with the sighting hole, rotate the instrument in the vertical direction, and use the sighting hole and the sight post tip to aim at the top of the object being measured; pause briefly. 2-3 After the pendulum has come to rest in a plumb position, pull the trigger; the pendulum will then lock in place. Read the value indicated by the pointer on the corresponding baseline of the height scale—this is the measured height. h 。
(2) Measuring Height on a Slope
When on a ground with a slope angle (slope angle α) When measuring the height of an object, first measure the distance along the slope, then use an instrument to determine the angle α and the elevation (or depression) angle. From these measurements, calculate the heights of the two segments separately, and finally take their sum or difference to obtain the height of the object being measured.
(3) Measuring Slope
The methods for measuring the depression and elevation angles are the same as those described above; the degree of the slope angle is obtained by reading the value on the lowest line of the altitude scale.
V. Notes and Maintenance Instructions
( 1 ) Lock the pointer after use;
( 2 ) Place gently and do not apply pressure to avoid cracking the glass lid;
( 3 ) Store in a clean, dry environment free of corrosive gases;
( 4 ) Avoid allowing rainwater and dust to enter during use;
( 5 ) Do not disassemble any components of the instrument yourself.
