The geologic hammer is a core tool in geological fieldwork, used for striking rocks, collecting samples, cleaning weathered surfaces, and sampling along structural planes. It combines the functions of breaking hard rock, cleaning surfaces, and obtaining precise samples, making it an essential piece of equipment for geological exploration. The pointed-head geologic hammer is primarily used for striking volcanic and other hard rocks, such as granite; it is also suitable for use in metamorphic and certain sedimentary terrains. In contrast, the flat-head geologic hammer is better at removing surface coatings from rocks and facilitates sampling along bedding or cleavage planes, making it particularly useful in sedimentary settings.
